Which teeth qualify for the treatment of dental filling? Teeth which are cracked, broken or chipped are the ones which are eligible for the treatment. If they are left open, without treatment, they house bacteria which can eventually increase the damage to those teeth and damage the other healthy teeth as well.

The fillings are available in different varieties like,

  • Gold Fillings
  • Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
  • Teeth Coloured Fillings
  • Ceramic Fillings
  • Glass Ionomers

These are the type of fillings available, but mainly Gold, Amalgam and Teeth Coloured Fillings are used nowadays.

Not sure which one to select? Don’t worry we’ll help you out!

Gold Fillings

Gold Fillings are very durable. They last for at least 10 to 15 years. They do not corrode. They are very strong as well and can easily withstand chewing forces. Plus, it’s very aesthetic!

Amalgam (Silver) Fillings

Amalgam Fillings lasts for 10 to 15 years as well. They are better than composite fillings. They are strong as well and can withstand chewing forces. But are cheaper than gold fillings.

Tooth Coloured Composite Fillings

Tooth Coloured Composite Fillings match the colour of natural teeth. They are perfectly well suited in the front position. These are used in various places apart from being used as a filling material for decay like, to repair chipped, broken or worn teeth. Sometimes, less tooth structure needs to be removed as compared to amalgam fillings when removing decay.

Which one to go for?

If you have a high budget, you should go with gold fillings. If you are low on budget, then you have to choose from amalgam or composite fillings.

Amalgam Fillings don’t match with the colour of your teeth. There is more destruction of healthy teeth to make space for a large amalgam filling. These can also create a greyish hue to the surrounding teeth structure. Silver tends to expand and contract in the presence of hot and cold liquids, which can fracture or crack other teeth. Also, a very small percentage of people in this world are allergic to the mercury present in the amalgam fillings. So, it could not be good for you.

On the other hand, composite fillings are not much durable and wear out sooner than amalgams. They have low strength against the chewing force. In some cases, more than one clinic visit may be necessary. It could easily be chipped off depending on the location. These cost approximately twice the rate of amalgam fillings.

In the end, it is very necessary to say that these treatments can cost a lot of money, time and patience and should be done by experts only like Radhika Confi-Dental.
